Playing on the fears of an electorate whose indebtedness had risen precipitously since the previous ballot, the government undermined the opposition’s credentials as a trustworthy economic manager. The opposition gave the government little trouble because a new generation of Labor politicians was oblivious of the economic forces that had shaped interest rates under previous Labor governments.
